Der estnische Staatspräsident hat Boris Björn Bagger mit dem Marienland-Orden ausgezeichnet. Dieser Orden wird für außerordentliche Verdienste um die Republik Estland als höchste Auszeichnung verliehen. Boris Björn Bagger wird damit für seinen Beitrag zum Kulturaustausch geehrt.
Als Deutscher und Este ist Bagger in beiden Ländern auf verschiedenen Kultursektoren tätig. Er lehrt an der
Musikhochschule
Karlsruhe, musiziert mit der Badischen Staatskapelle und tritt als Solist und Konzertgitarrist von internationalem Rang in vielen Ländern mit großem Erfolg auf. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Aufführung estnischer Musik von Komponisten wie
Lepo Sumera,
Jaan Rääts oder
Urmas Sisask. Sie steht auch im Mittelpunkt des 1992 von Bagger gegründeten Musikverlags
edition 49, der seinen Sitz in Karlsruhe und Tallinn hat. Die
edition 49 bringt ein breites Repertoire estnischer Musik als Notenausgaben und CDs heraus und vergibt Kompositionsaufträge. Bereits mehr als 50 solcher Aufträge sind bislang an estnische Komponisten in ganz Europa ergangen.
Auf Initiative und unter der künstlerischen Leitung Boris Björn Baggers wurden 1992 in Karlsruhe die Europäischen Kulturtage zum Thema Estland ausgerichtet, der bis dahin größte Kulturexport der Republik an der Ostsee. Dafür wurde Bagger mit dem Musikpreis der Republik Estland geehrt. Im selben Jahr regte er zusammen mit profilierten Persönlichkeiten aus Deutschland und Estland die Gründung der Deutsch-Estnischen Gesellschaft in Karlsruhe an. Sie gewährt Musikstudenten aus Estland ein Stipendium, um ihnen das Studium an der
Karlsruher Musikhochschule zu ermöglichen. Außerdem bemüht sich die Gesellschaft um die Völkerverständigung und den regen Austausch zwischen Deutschland und Estland auf vielen Gebieten.
