First Lady des estnischen Rock: Siiri Sisask
Siiri Sisask gehört zu den populärsten Künstlerinnen in Estland. Film- und Fernsehproduktionen haben sie schon früh in ihrer Heimat bekannt gemacht. Bei ihrer ersten Aufnahme war sie zwölf Jahre alt. Inzwischen wirkte sie in acht Filmen und Serien mit. 1985 trat sie erstmals im estnischen Fernsehen als Sängerin bei einer Konkurrenz auf und errang dabei den 2.Preis.
Danach gehörte Siiri Sisask verschiedenen Rockbands an. Damit begann ihre Gesangskarriere, die zunächst allerdings auf politische Komplikationen stieß: Die Songs von Nina Hagen, mit denen sie auftrat, waren in der damaligen Sowjetunion verboten, weshalb sie auch bei der linientreuen estnischen Presse in die Schußlinie geriet. Dennoch wurde die Sängerin seit 1987 von der offiziellen Konzertagentur ihres Landes betreut. Mit den bekanntesten Rockbands Estlands tourte sie durch die ganze Sowjetunion. Moskau, Leningrad, Minsk, Kiew und Murmansk gehörten ebenso zu ihren Stationen wie Wladiwostok, Tscheljabinsk, Swerdlowsk, Rostok und Wilna, um nur einige zu nennen.
Danach verließ Siiri Sisask die Agentur und arbeitete seit 1989 als freie Künstlerin. Mit 21 Jahren wurde sie Mutter, ihr Sohn Jost kam auf die Welt. Als er drei Monate alt war, nahm die Sängerin ihre Karriere wieder auf - mit der Hauptrolle in dem estnischen Musical "Jeanne d'Arc". Weitere Tourneen mit diversen Rockbands führten sie u.a. nach Finnland, Rumänien und in die Türkei.
Schon immer hatte die Sängerin Lust am Komponieren, doch ihren ersten Klaviersong legte sie 1992 vor: "Ma ei maga, ma ei söö" (Ich schlafe nicht, ich esse nicht), ein Liebeslied, das 1993 zum Hit Nr.1 in Estland wurde. Von da an wurden ihre Songs für Rundfunk und Fernsehen in ihrer Heimat aufgenommen. Bislang schrieb Siiri Sisask über 30 Songs, der estnische Rundfunk produzierte davon mehr als die Hälfte.
Zwischen 1992 und 1996 trat die populäre Sängerin auch auf Fährschiffen auf, sammelte dort weitere künstlerische Erfahrungen. Mit ihrer gereiften Stimme hatte Siiri Sisask im vergangenen Jahr mit dem Musical "Marlene", eine mitreißende Hommage an Marlene Dietrich, am traditionsreichen Theater Vanemuine in Tartu, Estlands zweitgrößter Stadt, großen Erfolg. Auch bei vielen Fernsehshows, die Siiri Sisask moderierte, untermauerte sie ihren Ruf als First Lady des estnischen Rock.

Ihre Lieder sprechen für sich selbst
Siiri Sisasks Songs sprechen für sich selbst, sagt die Sängerin, die um ihre Musik nicht viele Worte machen will. Eine große Triebfeder ist die Sehnsucht, die große Emotion, die sie zum Komponieren anregt, ihr auch den Brückenschlag zur Klassik ermöglichte: Die Arie aus Händels "Rinaldo" hat, wie sie sagt, ihr die Tür zur Klassik geöffnet und ist zur Keimzelle dieser CD geworden: Als sie die Arie zum ersten Mal hörte, hat sie gleich die Traurigkeit gefühlt, die Größe dieser Musik und auch die Liebe, die in ihr steckt. Für Boris Björn Bagger erfüllte sich damit ein lange gehegter Wunsch: Er wollte die Arie schon seit 20 Jahren mit einer Rocksängerin produzieren. Warten lohnt sich...
Ein anderes Beispiel für das, was Siiri Sisask am Herzen liegt, ist "Ma ei maga, ma ei söö". Bevor sie dieses Lied komponierte, hatte sie nie Klavier gespielt. Dann verliebte sie sich, setzte sich ans Instrument, ließ ihrer spontanen Fantasie freien Lauf, spürte der tiefen Dimension ihrer Empfindung nach. "Ich schlafe nicht, ich esse nicht", weil meine Seele dich braucht: Das ist die Botschaft dieses großartigen Songs.
Überhaupt: Ihre Musik gilt Menschen. "Unelaul" (Wiegenlied) ist ihrem Sohn Jost gewidmet. "Amazing Grace" kreist um das Thema Religion, mit dem sich Siiri Sisask beschäftigt, "um etwas über mich selbst zu lernen", wie sie sagt. Sie möchte mit diesen Songs Begriffe wie Liebe, Geduld und Mitgefühl vermitteln.
"Meine Kunst spricht aus sich selbst", betont die Sängerin. Ihre Lieder sagen, wer sie ist. Auch die Gruppe, mit der sie diese CD eingespielt hat, inspirierte sie - mit dem verblüffenden Sound einer "kammermusikalischen Rockformation".

Story einer musikalischen Partnerschaft
Urmas Sisask ist ein führender Komponist in Estland und Bruder der Rocksängerin. Durch ihn lernte Boris Björn Bagger 1996 Siiri Sisask kennen. Von den Farben und dem Ausdruck, aber auch dem Improvisationstalent ihrer außergewöhnlichen Stimme war er gleich begeistert. Spontan beschlossen die beiden ein Projekt im Spannungsfeld zwischen U und E, zwischen Rock und Klassik, zwei Musikwelten, die dem Karlsruher Gitarristen bestens vertraut sind.
Das Spannungsfeld hat das Duo zu vielen Einfällen inspiriert. An Händels Rinaldo-Arie, bei der vitaler Rock an die Stelle barocker Verzierungskunst tritt, bewährte sich erstmals die Idee einer Symbiose der beiden Klangsphären - und sie verhalf dem Duo zum ersten Erfolg bei einem Konzert in Karlsruhe mit nur einer Probe. Es produzierte daraufhin diesen und zwei weitere Songs, schickte sie an den Fernsehsender Pro7 - und landete damit den nächsten, spektakulären Coup: Es gehörte zu den 13 besten Einsendungen von insgesamt 15000. Dieser Durchbruch gab weiteren Aufwind. Ein voller Erfolg mit begeistertem Publikum war auch das Konzert im Juli 1997 in der estnischen Stadt Keila, aus dessen Mitschnitt einige Songs dieser CD stammen.
CD - dieser Titel markiert das besondere musikalische Programm des Duos. Es wandelt sich wie jene charakteristische Malerei auf Wänden und Mauern und stellt wie diese eine Art Momentaufnahme dar: Gesang als Bildnis, tönendes Gemälde des Augenblicks. Daß Siiri Sisask neben ihrer Musik auch tatsächlich malt, führt ebenfalls zur Verbindung zwischen Tönen und Bildern in ihrem Gesang, in dem die Farben des Gefühls eine so große Rolle spielen.

The international acoustic band
Gitarre, wurde in Karlsruhe geboren. Er studierte an der dortigen Musikhochschule sowie in Freiburg. Meisterkurse führten ihn zu Julian Bream, Narciso Yepes, Wolfgang Lendle und Siegfried Behrend. Als ständiger Gast musiziert er mit dem Ensemble 13 sowie im Badischen Staatstheater Karlsruhe. Bagger arbeitete außerdem mit namhaften Solisten wie Kalle Randalu, Detlef Tewes , Martin Ostertag und Jean-Claude Gerard sowie Dirigenten wie Pierre Boulez und Michael Gielen zusammen. Seine Vielseitigkeit bewies er bei Konzertreisen quer durch Europa und nach Kanada, ferner bei zahlreichen Aufnahmen für Rundfunk und Schallplatte (bisher über 14 CD Aufnahmen). Seit 1990 hat Boris Björn Bagger einen Lehrauftrag an der Karlsruher Musikhochschule. 1992 berief ihn die Stadt Karlsruhe zum künstlerischen Leiter der Europäischen Kulturtage. Als erstem ausländischen Künstler wurde Boris Björn Bagger 1994 der estnische Musikpreis verliehen (zu den weiteren prominenten Trägern dieses Preises zählt u.a. Arvo Pärt).

In 1994 Boris Björn Bagger was the first foreign artist to be awarded the Estonian Music Prize (other well-known recipients include Arvo Pärt).

Tõnis Tüür (Bass, Estonia)
begann mit dem Bassunterricht 1988 an der staalichen Musikschule in Tallinn (Estland). Seither spielt er in den führenden estnischen und internationalen Rock-, Jazz- und Bluesbands. Tourneen führten in durch Deutschland, Finnland, Lettland und Estland. 1989 und 1990 gewann er den Wettbewerb für junge Komponisten in der Kategorie Jazz-Musik (instrumental) in Estland. Als Studiomusiker wirkte er bei vielen Aufnahmen mit.
Tõnis Tüür spielt hier bei den Aufnahmen einen CLEVINGER UPRIGHT-BASS und benutzt THOMASTIK Saiten.

Since then he has played in the most influential Estonian and international rock, jazz and blues bands. He has toured with concerts in Germany, Finland, Latvia and Estonia. In 1989 and 1990 he won the competition for young composers in the category of jazz music (instrumental) in Estonia. He can be heard on many studio recordings.

Mait Martin (Guitar, Estonia)
begann seine Studien im Fach Gitarre in Tallinn (Estland) und studiert jetzt an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe bei Boris Björn Bagger. Er ist Mitglied des Ensembles „NYYD" (Estland, Ensemble für zeitgenössische Musik). Mit diesem Ensemble hat er als Gitarrist bei Aufführungen von Arnold Schönbergs Kammermusik mitgewirkt. In Estland hat er bei mehreren Produktionen am Stadttheater Tallinn teilgenommen.
Mait Martin spielt Hannabach Saiten.

DER MÄDCHENCHOR „ELLERHEIN"
Der Mädchenchor „Ellerhein" wurde 1951 gegründet. Gründer und Leiter des Chores war Heino Kaljuste (1925-1989). 1989 übernahm Tiia-Ester Loitme die Leitung des Chores. Der Chor hat bisher bei 2000 Konzerten (das Repertoire reicht von der Renaissance bis zur Gegenwart) mitgewirkt und an internationalen Festivals sowie Wettbewerben erfolgreich teilgenommen.

The girls choir "Ellerhein" was founded in 1951. The founder and conductor of the choir was Heino Kaljuste (1925-1989). Since 1989 Tiia-Ester Loitme has been the chief conductor. The choir has given over 2000 concerts (Repertory: renaissance till contemporary choral works), has been a guest at numerous international festivals and has successfully taken part at several important competitions.

Valdo Preema (Estonia)
studierte an der staatlichen Musikschule Tallinn Schlagzeug. Er spielt in den wichtigsten Jazz- und Rockbands, wie z. B. der „New Murphy Band". Als Arrangeur und Komponist ist er in der Jazz- und Rockszene und mit Bühnenmusik sehr erfolgreich. 1997 übernahm er das Management der edition 49 in Tallinn, Estland. Fast alle Soli für Gitarre auf dieser CD stammen aus seiner Feder.
graduated from the Tallinn Music College (Estonia) as percussionist. He plays in major jazz- and rockbands such as the "New Murphy Band". As an arranger and composer he is very successful in the field of jazz- (rock) and theatre music. In 1997 he took over the management of edition 49 in Tallinn, Estonia. Most of the guitar solos on this CD are written by him.
First Lady of Estonian Rock: Siiri Sisask
Siiri Sisask is one of the most popular artists in Estonia. At a relatively early age, she became well-known through film and television productions--she made her first recording at the age of twelve. In the meantime, she has taken part in eight films and series. She sang on television for the first time in a contest in 1985, and won 2nd place.
Afterwards, Siiri performed in various rock bands. This was the beginning of her singing career, which caused certain political complications, however: the Nina Hagen songs which she performed were forbidden in the Soviet Union, and as a result she had problems with the communist-controlled press. In spite of this, from 1987 onward, this singer was represented by the official concert agency of her country. She toured the entire Soviet Union with the most famous Estonian rock bands. Moscow, Leningrad, Minsk, Kiev and Murmansk were some of the places where she performed, as well as Vladivostok, Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk, Rostok and Vilnius, to name a few.
Then Siiri Sisask left the agency and worked as a free lance artist, starting in 1989. At the age of 21 she became a mother, her son Jost arrived. When he was three months old, Siiri took up her career again--with the main role in the Estonian musical „Jeanne d'Arc". Further tours with various rock bands took her, for example, to Finnland, Romania and Turkey.
Siiri had always wanted to compose. In 1992, she finally brought out her first song, with piano accompaniment: „Ma ei maga, ma ei söö" (I don't sleep, I don't eat), a love song that became Hit Nr. 1 on the Estonian charts in 1993. From that point on, her songs were recorded for radio and television in her home country. Up till now, Siiri Sisask has written over 30 songs; the Estonian radio has produced more than half of them.
Between 1992 and 1996 the popular vocalist performed on ferry ships, adding to her artistic experience. With her mature voice, Siiri Sisask sang the Musical „Marlene" last year, a hommage to Marlene Dietrich, with tremendous success at the Vanemuine Theater in Tartu, Estonia's second largest city. The many television shows which Siiri Sisask moderated, reinforced her reputation as the first lady of Estonian rock.
Her Songs speak for themselves
Siiri Sisask's songs speak for themselves, says the vocalist, who doesn't lose many words over her music. One main motive is the longing, the great emotion, which stimulates her to compose and made possible the bridge to classical music--the aria from Händel's „Rinaldo" opened the door to classical music and became the roots of this CD. As she heard the aria for the first time, she was filled with sadness, the greatness of the music and the love which it contains. For Boris Björn Bagger a long awaited wish was fulfilled: he had wanted to produce the aria with a rock singer for 20 years. It was worth the wait...
Another example of what matters to Siiri Sisask is „Ma ei maga, ma ei söö". Before she composed this song, she had never played the piano. Then she fell in love, seated herself at the instrument, and allowed her fantasy to take over, reflecting the deep dimension of her feelings. „I don't sleep, I don't eat", because my soul needs you: this is the message of this wonderful song.
Her music certainly has to do with people. „Unelaul" (Lullaby) is dedicated to her son Jost. „Amazing Grace" centers around the theme religion, with which Siiri occupies herself „to learn more about myself", as she says. She would like to convey concepts such as love, patience and sympathy with her songs.
„My art speaks out by itself", says Siiri. Her songs say who she is. The group with which she recorded this CD also inspired her - with the startling sound of a „chamber musical rock formation."
Story of a musical partnership
Urmas Sisask is a leading composer in Estonia and the brother of the rock singer. Through him, Boris Björn Bagger met Siiri Sisask in 1996. He was immediately enthusiastic about the color and expression of her unusual voice, as well as her improvisational talent. The two of them spontaneously decided to work together on a project ranging somewhere in the high voltage area between rock and classic, two contrasting worlds of music which the guitarist from Karlsruhe knows well.
This high voltage inspired many ideas for the duo. Händel's Rinaldo aria was the first song to stand the test of the daring combination of sounds, using vital rock instead of barock ornamentation -- and brought the duo their first success in a concert in Karlsruhe, after only one rehearsal! They proceeded to record this and two other songs, sent them to the television sender Pro 7 - and landed their next spectacular coup: theirs was one of the top 13 out of 15000 contributions. This break-through gave even more motivation. A further total success could be chalked up to their account after a concert in July of 1997 in the Estonian city of Keila. Several of the songs on this CD come from the recording of this concert.
First acoustic graffiti - this title marks the special musical program of the duo. What graffiti is to painting, her music expresses in sound, and as such is an expression of the moment: song as a portrait, resonating pictures of the moment. The fact that Siiri actually does paint as well as sing, also leads to a connection between tone and pictures in her songs, in which the colors of feelings are so important.
